Sail Training is carried out aboard a huge range of class of vessel. The most famous are the tallships however any sea going vessel that meets the standards and is registered in Ireland with Sail Training Ireland can engage in Sail Training. The basic principle of Sail Training is that Trainees are brought to sea to live on board and operate a vessel led by a core group of trained crew. Taking a tallship example: There may be 40 trainees taken aboard. They will leave port and generally embark on a voyage of 6 - 10 days at sea. They will be divided into watchs on a four hour rotation and will be responsible for operating every aspect of the ship under the watchful eye and leadership of the Captain and Crew. From setting sails, to steering, plotting courses, maintaining, cooking and cleaning. The best way to understand it is watch this video
